Another Charity-Funded Transformation
Milton Keynes Hospital Charity is proud to have funded another significant transformation within the Children’s Emergency Department at Milton Keynes University Hospital – this time improving the specialist room where young people in mental health crisis wait for support.
This space is used by some of our most vulnerable and emotional children and teenagers. While it must remain clinically functional, the team felt strongly that it should also offer comfort, reassurance, and a sense of safety. Thanks to generous charitable support, we have been able to introduce calming natural imagery and a gentler, more comforting visual environment – helping to make a difficult experience a little less overwhelming.
Building on Previous Improvements in ED
This is not the first time Milton Keynes Hospital Charity has supported improvements within Children’s ED.
In 2022, we helped fund a makeover of another specialist room in the department – a space used for young patients undergoing sensitive examinations. That earlier project transformed a plain clinical room into a welcoming, child‑friendly environment, complete with nature‑inspired décor designed to ease anxiety and support staff during challenging moments.
Both projects share the same core principle: the right environment can make a profound difference to a child’s experience of emergency care.
By continuing to enhance these spaces, we are helping to ensure that every child – whether they are scared, hurt, or in crisis – feels safe, comforted, and supported throughout their time in hospital.
A Calmer More Supportive Space for Young People in Crisis
The newly updated room brings nature indoors, creating a soothing sense of the outdoors while maintaining the clinical requirements needed for emergency care.
These thoughtful design changes help:
- Reduce feelings of fear or overwhelm
- Provide a more peaceful environment during lengthy waiting periods
- Support emotional wellbeing for young people and their families
- Create a space where delicate conversations can happen more comfortably
For children experiencing mental health distress, these small but powerful design elements can help make a hugely difficult moment feel a little more manageable.
Made Possible Through Community Support
This project was brought to life thanks to the generosity and partnership of:
- MK Community Foundation
- Parias Construction & Interiors Ltd
- C&B Electrical Contractors Ltd
Their support has helped us create a space that will have a lasting positive impact on the young people who need it most.
