At Milton Keynes University Hospital, books play an important role in helping patients feel calm, engaged, and supported during their time in hospital. This World Book Day, we were delighted to celebrate the power of reading across our wards – thanks to the generosity of two wonderful supporters.
From activity books that support rehabilitation on adult wards to beautifully illustrated stories that help children understand their hospital journey, each donation made a meaningful difference to patient experience.
A Kind Donation from Busy Bee Books for Ward 7
We began the week with a generous gift from Michelle, one of our regular traders in the hospital’s main entrance. Michelle kindly donated a selection of activity books and resources for patients on Ward 7.
These items were requested by Wendy, one of the ward’s brilliant therapy assistants, who shared how vital they are in supporting rehabilitation. The books help patients:
- Improve movement and fine motor skills
- Stimulate sensory engagement
- Boost cognitive function through puzzles and word challenges
- Ease boredom during longer stays
- Build confidence in everyday tasks
Every time a book is purchased from Michelle during her visits, she donates additional books back to the hospital. Look out for her in the MKUH Main Entrance area, next time you visit the hospital.

World Book Day on Our Children’s Wards and in Children’s ED
We continued our celebrations by visiting Wards 4 and 5, as well as Children’s ED, with special book donations from our onsite contractors ModuleCo.
ModuleCo generously donated copies of Riley Goes to Hospital, a beautifully illustrated book they published to help children understand who they might meet and what to expect during a hospital stay.
For children who may be feeling nervous or overwhelmed, this simple resource can make a big difference – helping to reduce anxiety and encourage confidence.
The donation arrived just in time for World Book Day, which our fantastic Play Team celebrated with fun activities and shared reading sessions. The books were a perfect addition to the day and will continue to support young patients and their families all year round.
